Business directories for Australian website listing.
Listing Updated 6.01.2020
Potential customers are using search engines like Google to look for businesses like yours every minute of every day. While there are numerous SEO strategies to target local visitors seeking the products you have, a great first choice would be taking advantage of Australian business directory listings.
Listing with local directories is every bit as important now, in 2020, as it ever was. It may seem obvious, but having your name, address and phone number, (NAP details), in the most popular business directories, is a must so far as local search is concerned. Also, Australian business directories aren’t only good for improving your local search numbers; they can also boost ‘referral traffic’, from people clicking links on your listing, and as such, improve your rating with Google.
How to Locate the Top Australian Business Directories?
As you start to look for appropriate directories, you will likely come across directories boasting 50, 100 or as many as 250 Australian business directory sites. Chances are you’ll do worse than waste your time on these, as you could do damage your website’s Google ranking. Problems with such directories include:
- They are often a scam, formulated by using old outdated lists and data,
- They are full of directories demanding payment, or requiring reciprocal links,
- They have not been fully edited. Many directories have incomplete forms, broken links and are a no-no so far as Google is concerned,
- They are websites with little traffic or no value, and may be de-indexed by Google
Since 2014, when we first published our best directory list, we’ve been constantly updating, which is why we have a product which is relevant in 2018. We cast our net wide, searching the top 100 in Google for over 20 industry terms. This gave us almost 300 directories. After removing all the directories which failed our stringent testing regimen, we took a final step to ensure the remaining websites had real traffic value.
In 2014 we used the ‘Alexa Ranking’; the best measure of local Australian website traffic at the time. In 2018 there are much better SEO tools available, particularly ahrefs.com, which allows us to evaluate the actual traffic volume websites. It can also calculate the equivalent costing if you were to purchase that traffic volume through paid ads, (Adwords). This in fact is the basis of our ROI calculations for local SEO packages.
Preparing your business’s listing information.
Directory submissions often mean entering the same information over and over, so to avoid wasting time. We suggest gathering the following information into one document:
- 2-3 Business listing titles.
- Submission email address.
- Business contact email address.
- Business phone number.
- Social media links.
- At least two unique business descriptions (Typically 200 words max).
- Square logo image (Approx. 300px is fine for most websites).
- 5 business related images.
- Business ABN.
Having the above information on hand to copy and paste will make the process much faster.
Submission Tools and Tips
Automatic submission won’t work well in practice. Directories are built using a variety of platforms with varying fields. Thus a semi-automatic method is required. Your browser’s auto complete function will, at times, assist with form completion, but it’s an idea to manually review the fields to finish.
Submission hints:
- Crosscheck directories business names & phone numbers for duplicate listings.
- Do be sure your listings are as complete as possible to maximise value and effectiveness.
- Vary titles and descriptions for a unique listing, but be sure to use consistent login details.
- Be sure to use a dedicated email to separate business and personal emails.
- Be prepared for directories calling to upsell premium listings.
- Be sure you receive confirmation emails straightaway and after 5 days.
- And, of course, don’t forget to check with your clients on how your listing appears on the directory. Does it boost your profile? Are you getting referral traffic and hence backlink value? Maybe even ask them to suggest other Australian business directories they like in the comments section.

Website Promotion, SEO & What It Does for Your Website
This article covers a variety of online promotion methods, such as Search Engine Optimisation. It will help answer the all too familiar question; what does my business website need in order to reach a large number of potential customers via web-searches?
By definition Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is simply a name given to any activity used in an attempt to develop improved search engine standings.
What is SEO? What Role Does Google Play?
SEO is the best way to optimise a website; allowing it to appear in as high a position as possible when searched for by a search engine such as Google.
In general, the better the SEO is done on your website – the better your rank, thus directing more relevant traffic and potential customers to your website. This, in effect, increases the website visitors and should translate, at the end of the day, as increased custom for your business.
In most cases, the value of search engine optimisation for a business is obvious; it might well alter your search engine results from literally nowhere, Google’s 20th page for example, to the first page. The first page is certainly where you need to be to utilise your website to its full potential.
Can I Optimise the Website By Myself?
Yes, you can. You can certainly take steps to optimise the site yourself, but only if you understand of what you aredoing and the way your actions affect the Search Engine Algorithm, which itself is constantly changing. You website changes need to improve your website visibility as far as search functions are concerned.
If you are a person who is relatively well versed in modern technology at a generic level, you can safely make use the following method:
Installing an SEO Plugin on Your Website
A Plug-in is a program which extends the functionality of your website. Accordingly, an SEO plugin adds functionality to a site, allowing you to optimise pages and content (texts, pictures, videos etc.) to best suit the requirements of search engines.
If your site is running on the WordPress platform – and such are in the majority these days – installing an SEO plug-in, such as Yoast SEO, does not take much time at all.
Simply Follow the Steps
- Go to the control panel,
- go to the Plugins tab and click Add new,
- Paste ‘WordPress SEO by Yoast’ into the search field,
- Click Install Now, and then confirm the action in the pop-up window,
- Click on Activate plug-in after installation.
By installing the plugin, WordPress SEO by Yoast, you will be able to fill in the content with keywords, (read more about this below), add descriptions to the texts, edit links and much more, as prompted. This plugin is ideal for optimizing content.
However, although this plugin is easy to install, it is not quite so easy to configure. In most cases, you will gain an improvement by the utilisation of the standard functions, but if you feel you still require something more, I recommend that you contact a SEO specialist.
Use of keywords
Keywords are markers, and importantly, it is their use which allows Google, and other search engines, to understand and reference what the content of your website, and its pages, is actually about.
As an example, imagine you ran a small company for the distribution of coffee machines. How would Google understand what you are doing?
The Google search engine would scan your site, go through each page, analyse all the content and find keywords. Such words, from the site content would likely be; coffee, coffee machine, buy a coffee machine, coffee machine sales, coffee machines for coffee shops, coffee machine brands, etc. Then google will, via a set of complex algorithms, store the keyword information. When a user searches for a ‘coffee machine’, your website will appear in the results list.
Keywords Are Common Sense and You Can Find Them without Special SEO Tools
Here are a couple of simple recommendations:
- Think about what you would write in the search bar if you wanted to find your own website. (Not the name of the company.)
- Use the tips feature in Google. Just start typing the word “coffee machine” and see what the search engine predicts you will type. Related words may well be useful to you as alternative keywords.
After doing a little research, you should understand more about what pages to create, what to focus on and the best blog topics for you to start with. In addition, a comprehensive list of keywords will be selected during this process.
Links Which Reach Back to Your Website
A link is the address of a website or a specific website page on the Internet. The question you now need to ask is why are these links so important to search engines like Google?
For example, if you use Facebook, you may understand how accumulating likes and shares actually cause a post to rate higher and remain longer. In essence quality links act just as the likes and shares do on Facebook, only for search engines; accordingly, the more links which lead to your site, the brighter the signal for Google.
The importance of Quality Links Links to your own website from other sites is a must. Without doubt you need to find ways to encourage users to link to your website.
Here are a few ideas to establish external links:
- Create a blog and publish high-quality and interesting content that you want to share. Such content forms a positive image of the company as the leader of opinions in the niche your site occupies and attracts both business and social links.
- Register the site in relevant directories. Directories like Yellow Pages and a variety of small local business catalogues are quite useful in that they create, in effect, an additional trading and marketing platform for your business. By making use of them you are guarantying the generation of at least one quality link, for each of them, to the main index page of your site.
- Publish content as a guest on as many relevant, popular resources as you can. One article on Forbes or in the Morning Herald could well be more useful than a dozen in a small company blog.
- Performing such actions will enable you to learn which popular resources work well with your niche and allow you to become a regular contributor. Doing so will not only raise your business in comparison to your competition, but give you increased web traffic, add useful links, and almost definitely increase your customer base.
The Google search engine promotes links’ articles which it regards as convincing to the top range in its rankings, hence it is imperative that you create articles and pages which will be viewed as authoritative. All you require is to write content which people find knowledgeable and useful. Another plus is that useful content may be shared in blogs or twitter feeds etc. Google will pick up signals of genuine reliability and thus this process will help you to establish sturdy and sustainable Google ratings.
Note that it is important you remember that links should not be purchased. Google bots, when scanning your site, will mark such links as spam, and your site will likely suffer as a consequence. Google does not like spam in any form, be it text, comments or links.
The bottom line to this brief article is simple; if your business has a website, it must be promoted so that search engines (at least in Google) rate it highly as possible. With successful Search Engine Optimisation your site will flourish and drive business to your door. Without SEO, the site may well be a wasted effort and unlikely to attract customers.
Online Marketing for Small Business
Small business digital marketing pros share their top picks regarding the best ways for businesses with big plans but small budgets to market ..
Today, businesses have more ways — and places — than ever to market themselves. But deciding on a marketing method, particularly when you are a small or even a mid-sized business with a small budget and limited resources, can be difficult. While social media marketing is generally free, it can be time-consuming; and the same goes for blogging. But traditional print advertising, as well as digital advertising, can be expensive.

So which marketing channels are best for SMBs? Dozens of small business owners and marketing professionals share the following list of top marketing strategies for SMBs.
1. Blog. “One of the best marketing strategies for a small business is blogging,” says Maren Hogan, chief marketing brain at Red Branch Media.
“By providing your prospects and clients with informative, non-salesy content that you can house on your blog, promote socially and offer to other networks to supplement their strategy, you and your team can quickly establish yourselves as experts in a desired field,” Hogan says.

It can also positively impact your SEO.
“By blogging at least twice a week, you significantly increase your website’s ability to be found on search engines,” adds Mike Lieberman, chief marketing scientist and president, Square 2 Marketing. “The more you blog, the more traffic your site will get from Google, Yahoo and Bing… [because] you are adding fresh content to your site [assuming your blog resides on your company website],” he says. And “if each of your blog posts includes a call to action, you might even generate some leads from your blog.”
Business owners and managers should also consider guest blogging.
“Guest blogging is one of the best marketing tools I’ve ever found,” says Susan Payton, president, Egg Marketing & Communications. “By contributing to relevant blogs with useful content, you can expand your reach and show off your knowledge.” Moreover, you can typically link to your website via your author bio, “making it easy for people to visit your site.”
2. Leverage social media. “If your small business isn’t using social media, it’s time to start,” says Mike Volpe, CMO, HubSpot, which specializes in inbound marketing. “Social media produces almost double the marketing leads of trade shows, telemarketing or direct mail.”
Because social media can be (or seem) overwhelming, “choose one social media platform that your customers, prospects, and industry leaders engage with the most — be it Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Google+ — and start building a presence there,” Volpe says. “Once you’ve set up an account, start connecting sharing your original content, joining discussions and engaging with the community. Keep your social efforts frequent, but above all, relevant and helpful to your audience.”

Create a Facebook business page and use Facebook advertising. “Facebook is one of the most important marketing tools for any business to use, especially a small business,” says Tori Hoffman, the social media strategist at Potratz, an automotive advertising agency.
“Americans spend one out of every seven minutes on social media, providing a huge opportunity for small business owners to build a relationship with fans by sharing relevant content and interacting by commenting and liking fans’ comments,” Hoffman says. “The more a user interacts with a page, the more likely their friends are to see it, increasing awareness.”
Also consider Facebook advertising.
“We have been having great success for our mobile marketing clients with Facebook advertising,” says Bob Bentz, president of ATS Mobile, a mobile marketing agency. “The ads appear right in the news feed so it’s really impossible to miss. It is especially effective with local clients, because there is virtually no waste as with traditional media,” he says.
“A local restaurant, for instance, can promote just to the zip codes where it draws from. It can even target specific age groups and sex,” Bentz says. “Best of all, you can target those customers during the time that they are most likely to buy; for instance, you can display your ads just before and during the lunch and dinner hours.” And if your Facebook campaign isn’t getting the desired results, “there’s no long-term commitment. You can cancel at any time.”
4. Post to Pinterest and Instagram. If you are selling a highly visual product or service, say you are in the bridal or food business, you should be regularly posting images on Pinterest and/or Instagram. Posting is free and both platforms have large followings, particularly among women.
“You can drive major traffic to your website via Pinterest, and no platform uses hashtags to build audiences like Instagram,” says Eric Elkins, CEO and chief strategist at WideFoc.us, a real time social media company.
Powerful content to drive business growth
Who is your readers?
It`great to understand your audience.
Start by finding out what your audience already knows.
Perhaps the most common mistake made by content creators is to skip the step of figuring out what their audience knows already, and what it wants to learn. If you hope to connect with your audience, you need to meet them just slightly above their current level of understanding. If your content is too far above or beneath their current level of understanding, you’ll lose them.
Refine your insights by explaining them
It’s great to have your colleagues and others in your industry vet your ideas and content, but keep in mind that they are naturally biased in your favor – so don’t stop the vetting process there. Seek out test audiences with different perspectives.
